Steel doors

Steel doors are the strongest, most durable and most cost-efficient door material used for entry doors, and therefore also is the most common. They are made from heavy gauge galvanized steel and are resistant to shrinking, swelling, and warping. They’re coated with zinc to prevent rusting and built with a solid polyurethane foam core to provide superior insulation qualities.

New fabrication techniques for embossing and metal stamping give you the option of a variety of stamped shapes and patterns. There are even choices that attempt to duplicate a woodgrain pattern.

Proper Installation is key to energy efficiency and longevity

To operate at maximum efficiency, your new door must be installed properly. Even new doors that have high Energy Star ratings will only provide small energy savings if they’re installed poorly. A high-quality door installation should include:

  • A thorough inspection of the structural opening prior to installation

  • Factory-trained career installers (not temps or general contractors) performing the installation

  • Use of only top quality, factory-approved installation materials and supplies such as specialized caulking, low E foam, latex, trim, and fasteners.

All door frames are not created equal

To ensure a properly functioning entry door, a solid, properly built and installed door frame is critical. You may not easily be able to identify these requirements, and some of them are not industry standard, so ask your installer about them. These are some of the main areas where door frame construction makes a big difference:

  • Solid door sills are far superior, but not standard. Hollow chamber door sills will allow water infiltration that could damage your door over time.

  • All door hinges should be anchored to a steel plate on the exterior of the frame. This gives the door more strength. This is also not industry standard.

  • Your door should contain multiple air seals – not just one – to ensure maximum performance.

  • Thicker wood frames (i.e. 1 ½ or 1 ¾ inch wood frames) will perform much better than the industry standard of ¾ inch or 1-inch frames)

Review your warranty carefully.

Be sure that it guarantees the following:

  1. The quality of the installation (not just the door itself)

  2. Your door will function properly for an extended time period

  3. Any maintenance or service that might be needed over that same period

Keep in mind, “claims” about quality or service are just claims. They won’t help you if something goes wrong in a few years. Make sure you get a written warranty, which is a guarantee, and that’s what really matters.

A good warranty will guarantee all parts, installation, and service for the reasonable life of your door (at least 25 years).
