I've heard that the Canada Greener Homes Grant is ending soon. Is that true?
Our question this week comes from Cheryl in North York, ON regarding information on the Canada Greener Homes Grant and its potential conclusion.
Firstly, thanks for the question Cheryl :)
Initially according to industry insiders, it was announced that the Canada Greener Homes Grant could be ending as early as March 2024. However, we were recently informed that the Canada's Greener Homes Grant program will no longer be accepting new applicants and the deadline to book a first energy audit to be eligible for the HER+ program (Greener Homes Grant with Enbridge Gas) will end Friday, January 19, 2024.
How does this deadline affect the Greener Homes Loan?
This deadline applies specifically to the Greener Homes Grant.
As of writing, the Greener Homes Loan is still available. Homeowners undertaking energy-efficient retrofits can still apply for an interest-free Greener Homes Loan of up to $40,000 from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
We had mentioned in the past that nothing was 100% certain on the topic, but the information we've received now points to the notion that no new applications for the Greener Homes Grant will be accepted come January 19, 2024, but homeowners can still capitalize on the interest-free Greener Homes Loans of up to $40,000.
Verdict
From the information we've gathered, we have now learned that the Canada Greener Homes Grant will no longer be accepting new applicants as of January 19, 2024, but the Greener Homes Loan is still currently available.
What is the Canada Greener Homes Grant?
Announced in 2020 and launched in 2021, the Greener Homes Grant reimburses up to $5000 for qualifying retrofits. Qualifying retrofits should be recommended by the advisor to make residences more energy-efficient, and can include windows and doors, home insulation, heating equipment, and renewable energy. Other upgrades like resiliency measures, air sealing, and programmable thermostats are also covered, albeit to a lesser extent.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant is a government initiative aimed at supporting homeowners in making their homes more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. It's important to note that programs and policies may change, so be sure to check official government sources for the most up-to-date information.
